Personal / Baby Name
Birth place is selected step by step Country → Province → City → District, or type to search. Birth date is always entered in local time at the birth place; if a city is not listed, type it manually or leave it blank. The chart is auto-corrected by true solar time.
How to use it
Enter the birth date and place first, then press Calculate chart to get the Four Pillars and the element distribution. Then add the surname, sex, name length and style, and generate. Always enter the birth date in local time at the birthplace: the tool converts it to True Solar Time using longitude and latitude before casting the chart. This matters most for evening births, where an hour of error can change the entire hour pillar.
How the names are filtered
Candidate names are not random character pairs. The dictionary holds 9,721 characters used in names, each with pinyin, meaning, style tags and an element; Shuowen Jiezi definitions cover 7,316 of them. Generation filters out characters whose element clashes with the chart, narrows the pool by style, then removes awkward combinations by tone pattern and by colliding initials and finals. What survives is checked against 8 classical works and 14 chapter groups — the Book of Songs, Songs of Chu, the Analects, the I Ching and others — so a name is only offered if the phrase actually occurs. The same input always returns the same set; refreshing does not reshuffle it.
Boy names and girl names
Sex only tilts the candidate pool; it sets no hard limit. Choosing Any returns names of both temperaments, which suits anyone who wants the full picture before deciding. Where the two do differ: boy names more often end on an open vowel or a falling tone, which reads briskly, while girl names more often use level tones and repeated finals, which sound softer. Those are statistical tendencies, not rules.
Four things easily missed
- Running homophones. Say the surname and the given name together quickly three times, and listen for whether the last syllable of the surname plus the first of the given name forms another word.
- Rare characters. Characters with too many strokes, or outside the national standard character table, cause trouble at household registration, on ID documents and in exam systems.
- Repeating an elder's character. Tradition avoids characters from the names of direct ancestors. The system cannot check this for you.
- Polyphonic characters. If a character has more than one reading, strangers will guess wrong. Avoid them if that bothers you.
Can results be saved?
Yes — add a name to your saved list and it stays in your browser's local storage; it will not follow you to another device. For the full breakdown, the name report on each card can be printed or saved as a PDF. Nothing here is charged, no account is needed, and the birth details you enter are never collected.
Frequently asked questions
Is the name generator free?
Yes. There is no account, no sign-up and no daily limit. The name generation runs in your browser, and the site is funded by advertising.
Will I get the same names next time?
Yes. The same surname, birth details and style always return the same set. Nothing is generated by a language model, so a result can be reproduced and checked.
Are boy names and girl names kept separate?
No. Sex only tilts the candidate pool; it sets no hard limit. Choosing Any shows names of both temperaments, which suits anyone who wants the full picture first.
